A while ago I was lucky enough to trip over the amazing Evie Cahir. She is a Melbourne-based artist and creates wonderful drawings and random sketch-like characters and still lifes. What makes it even more lovable is the fact that Evie is fascinated by the wrinkly, creased surfaces of old envelopes, vintage papers and candy wrappers to use as her canvas. In this regard, she and I share the same passion for using the good old tangible things to get inspired from and to fall in love with while working on projects. As you know, the limited Cure To Growing Older shirt started as a watercolor with dripping paint on paper. Relaunch Teaser

This is a little teaser for the relaunch that will be happening to Paper Heart with the Spring ‘12 season. Big things are planned. The first imagery is being tested and first sketches for exciting new products are being made. My desk is a mess of ideas.

So, yes. I am in Los Angeles for taking a last breath of summer air before the start of the new semester back in Germany. Spending time with my girlfriend and enjoying the goodness that the Asian/Mexican/California cuisine has to offer. This is what is clearing my head right now. I am already sketching up new stuff for an exciting relaunch of Paper Heart that will be coming up in the near future. Hey friends. Summer is coming to an end. Berlin is covered under a blanket of rain clouds. I am using the time to pack up all my stuff, put it into boxes and get ready for moving back to Tübingen tomorrow, for new fall semester. It was a good summer that I spent here in my home town. Met up with old and new friends and also excited to have created a new project on the side lines. My good friends Till and David from Dürerstuben and myself have started a blog called Luchs&Lunte (“lynx & fuse”), where we will regularly present a photograph, a track and poem as a package. Each part of this package has been inspired by the other parts, so that it will become a unique piece of art that makes use for all senses. We are proud to release the first post and are excited to see it reach you, the audience. It is up to you what you make of it. Stay tuned for more.

Moving Images

My friend Svenja visited me in Berlin. She is about to start into new exciting phases in her life, being a self-employed photographer. Svenja is the talented person who photographed both our 2009 and 2010 line of Paper Heart releases. Hanging out with her was like a reunion, especially with Mat and Till joining in. Check out a few shots taken by Svenja along the wayside today. Hands On

While I was strolling the flea market here in Berlin the other Sunday, I stumbled upon a guy who had baskets of old photographs, each for just a few cents. Based on their look I am dating them around the 1930’s. The past days I have put towards creating some new art pieces. I learned that you can be a good designer using the computer and arranging layers on screen, but it makes such a difference once you get back in touch with the actual elements and get your hands dirty. For Paper Heart, I always try to make a connection to the actual tangible thing and translate it into my designs. The design for the Cure To Growing Older shirt was hand drawn on paper with a rough brush to show the fine lines and dripping paint that often times gets lost in design that is purely computer generated.

So taking my old photos as a basis, I went to work and transformed the kitchen into a small workshop that was soon filled with colors and paper clippings. I get the biggest joy out of coming up with out-of-the-box ways of getting out a certain idea that’s stuck in my head. In one instance, I created a stencil of the word “home” and, while slightly bending it, traced the shadow onto a piece of cardboard, to create a second stencil. I hope I will soon be able to show you the results of my efforts and the series of pieces that will be the final product. In the meantime, I have an exciting look behind the scenes of the making of Make This A Home and the current line of shirts coming up that is long overdue but also a throwback to a year ago, when some of my best friends and myself travelled to Hamburg to begin the next chapter of Paper Heart.

Classic color themes will never die.

Hello my friends. I know, I have been absent for a while. I have completed my transition from California back to Berlin where I am now spending the summer working and also creating new exciting projects. I have borrowed a friend’s old typewriter and finding a lot of pleasure in writing up little blurbs, poems and letters the old fashioned way. I feel that every time I connect my hands to my brain and get crafty, it is incredibly inspiring. The results you can see for instance in the Cure To Growing Older shirt of the current PPRHRT collection (the stock of which is getting less and less, make sure to get yours). The lettering and dripping was hand drawn by me with black water color and I went through a small stack of paper doing it. It was a lot of fun (if I disregard the digitalization process that followed).
I also still shoot 35mm film and I hope I will soon be able to show you what came out of the last rolls of film I shot in California (as well as the first couple of pictures from Berlin). Reconnecting to the material and the analogue is important in the process of me being creative and artistic. I wish I could tell you about the new shirt ideas I have and the designs that are slowly taking shape in my head and on screen.

So my good friend Jussi is over from Finland and together with our homegirl Margaret, we went on quick roadtrip to San Francisco. The city was beautiful as I remembered it. Don’t get me wrong, SoCal is great. But being from Berlin, I really dig the young and artsy atmosphere in SF. It’s just exciting when you ride on the bus and suddenly spot a random Mike Giant wall piece at the corner. Had a great time, thank you for Ben and Chris for letting us stay over.

A Night Out In North Park

Last night, my friend Marissa and I went to North Park in San Diego, where a lot of art and creativity seems to be happening behind the facades and doors. Restaurants with delicious vegan and vegetarian treats and small vintage boutiques or record stores dominate the main and side streets. Agitprop, an independently run gallery space, had put on a beautiful and intimate event that featured the authors Mark Wallace, India Radfar and Simone Forti reading from their works. The event also featured a selection of works by Tim Schwartz. If you looked at the framed images from a distance or from the side, they appeared to be black. But they were actual prints of botanical imagery, showing what parts of a picture get lost in the process of digitalization, an issue a lot of museums and libraries face in this modern time. If you ever have a chance to visit North Park or Agitprop, you will be positively surprised. Support your local gallery.
